Understanding how the home environment and self-care demands intersect allows nurses to recognize hazards and barriers to self-care, and identify accommodations needed to support health care.
However, nurse educators’ ability to provide guided home care experiences in the field is limited. Simulated home experiences using virtual reality enables both individual and group opportunities for guided learning, practice, and assessment.
This simulation guide was developed by Gail Casper, PhD, RN at the UW–Madison School of Nursing for use with three-dimensional home models developed by the vizHOME project. The models are based on detailed scans of 20 real homes in southern Wisconsin, whose residents manage chronic conditions.
The simulation guide includes a sample lesson plan, descriptions of the 20 homes, and personas for residents of each home, including health histories.
Please note: The simulation guide is available for use, but no technical assistance related to it is available.
